Sacramento Diwali 2026: Two Free Events to Celebrate the Festival of Lights

Diwali — the Hindu Festival of Lights — falls on October 20, 2026, and the Sacramento area is marking it with two free, family-friendly celebrations in the surrounding communities that together put more than a dozen performers, a fireworks show, rangoli competitions, and a whole lot of street food within easy reach of the city.

Neither event requires a ticket. Both are outdoors. And both are built for the full spectrum of Sacramento’s Indian-American community and curious neighbors alike.

What Is Diwali?

Diwali is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the world, observed by Hindu, Jain, Sikh, and some Buddhist communities. The word comes from the Sanskrit deepavali, meaning “row of lights.” It marks the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. In 2026, California officially recognizes Diwali as a state holiday — the first year that designation is in effect — which makes this particular season feel especially significant for the community.

Celebrations typically last five days. The main day (the third day, when the oil lamps and fireworks reach peak intensity) is October 20, 2026. The events below fall on the weekends immediately surrounding it.

Elk Grove Diwali — Festival of Lights

The City of Elk Grove hosts its annual Diwali — Festival of Lights at the Civic Center, 8230 Civic Center Drive, on Thursday, October 22, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Admission is free and open to all ages.

The event is co-presented by USA Sanatan and the City of Elk Grove’s Diversity & Inclusion Commission. Past editions have drawn a large crowd from across the Sacramento region. The program includes a variety show of local performing groups and authentic ethnic foods from regional vendors — a good entry point for people who’ve never experienced a live Diwali celebration before.

Elk Grove’s Civic Center is about 20 miles south of downtown Sacramento via Highway 99. Street parking is available on the Civic Center grounds.

Suvidha International Foundation Diwali — Rancho Cordova

The larger of the two local celebrations is organized by the Suvidha International Foundation in partnership with the City of Rancho Cordova. It takes place at Stone Creek Park, 3625 Spoto Drive, Rancho Cordova, on Sunday, October 25, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Also free.

Suvidha’s celebration is the one with the fireworks. An aerial show closes out the evening at 8 PM. During the afternoon, the park fills with cultural performances, food stalls, business and vendor booths, and kids’ carnival games. There are also Diwali-themed competitions open to the public: a costume contest for ages 15 and under, a rangoli design competition, and saree and lehenga fashion contests.

The foundation is also giving away Special Diwali Sweet Boxes to the first 200 families who register in advance — check their website at suvidhainternational.org to sign up. Stone Creek Park is off the Zinfandel Drive exit from US-50, roughly 12 miles east of downtown Sacramento.

Planning Your Visit

For the Elk Grove event, arrive early. The Civic Center fills up, and parking on nearby streets goes fast as the variety show gets underway. Comfortable walking shoes and a light jacket for the evening are sensible choices for an October outdoor event in the Central Valley.

For the Rancho Cordova celebration, the fireworks finale at 8:00 PM is the draw for families with kids — and it means a late evening on a Sunday. If you’re bringing young children, plan for the fireworks but have an exit strategy. The food stalls and carnival games start at 2:00 PM, so there’s no reason to rush the arrival.

Both events are worth the short drive out of the city. Sacramento is one of the most diverse cities in the country, and Diwali has quietly become one of its biggest autumn traditions.

Bottom Line

Sacramento’s Diwali 2026 season runs from October 20 through October 25, with two free outdoor celebrations anchoring the calendar. Elk Grove’s Civic Center event on October 22 is a good compact option for a weekday evening outing; the Suvidha Foundation’s Stone Creek Park celebration on October 25 adds fireworks and a full afternoon of competitions. Both are free, both welcome the whole family, and both are a short drive from the city.

If you’re exploring more ways to get out this fall, here’s what else is on the calendar: the Golden Harvest Parade on October 24 runs just one day before the Rancho Cordova Diwali, making for a very full multicultural weekend. And if Día de los Muertos is also on your list, Sacramento’s events for that celebration start the same week.
