Every Thanksgiving week, something quietly remarkable happens on K Street in Old Sacramento. The storefronts go dark, the street closes to traffic, and a 60-foot holiday tree appears in the middle of the waterfront district. Then the balconies light up. Costumed performers take their marks on the façades of 150-year-old brick buildings, and Sacramento’s longest-running free holiday show begins.
The Theatre of Lights at the Old Sacramento Waterfront is entering its 18th season in 2026. It’s produced by the Downtown Sacramento Partnership and runs on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings from Thanksgiving Eve through Christmas Eve. Tickets don’t exist. You just show up, find a spot on K Street, and watch.
What to Expect
The show is approximately 20 minutes long. Performers work the balconies of the historic buildings along K Street, turning the entire block into a live stage. The story blends a retelling of a classic Christmas poem with Sacramento history, narrated in previous seasons by Bill Farmer — the voice of Goofy. Jack Frost makes an appearance. So does St. Nick, who lights the tree at the season-opening ceremony.
The production is genuinely theatrical. The building facades themselves become part of the set, with lighting, sound, and live actors working multiple stories above street level. It reads like something between an outdoor play and a light display, and the scale of it — a full city block, crowds filling K Street — makes it feel like a proper Sacramento event rather than a side attraction.
The Sacramento Kings are a title sponsor, which is fitting given that the Kings are partly responsible for the revitalization of the downtown corridor that made Old Sacramento feel connected to the rest of the city again.
The 2026 Season Opening
The Downtown Sacramento Partnership has confirmed the Theatre of Lights is returning for 2026. Specific dates for this season haven’t been published as of October 2026 — check downtownsac.org for the official 2026 calendar when it’s posted.
Based on the show’s consistent schedule over 17 seasons, the 2026 season will open around Thanksgiving Eve (Wednesday, November 25) with the Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony, then run Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through December 24. The tree lighting has historically started at 5:30 PM with the first show at 6:15 PM. Regular weekend shows run at 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, and 6:30 PM on Sundays.
Practical Details
The best viewing spot is the middle of K Street, closest to Front Street — roughly between Steamers Bar & Grill and Stage Nine Exhibitions. You can bring a chair, but be aware that a crowd builds up quickly and taller guests may block your line of sight. Standing works fine for most people.
K Street closes to through traffic on weekends during the show run, so parking in the garages is the right call. The Tower Garage at 1289 Front Street and the Old Sacramento Garage at 274 I Street (between 2nd and 3rd) are both at the entrance to Old Sacramento. Prepaid advance reservations get 25 percent off, and neither garage validates for the Theatre of Lights. Street parking outside the district is available but limited, especially once the show draws a full crowd on Saturday nights.
Dogs are welcome on a leash, though K Street gets packed on busy nights and it can be a lot for anxious animals. ADA ramps are accessible on K Street, and ASL interpreters are present for Saturday evening shows, the Tree Lighting Ceremony, and the December 24 finale.
Rain cancellations are announced by 10 AM on the day of the show through the Downtown Sacramento Partnership’s social media. Cancelled shows are not rescheduled.

Pair It With Something Else
Old Sacramento on a Theatre of Lights weekend is worth making a full evening. The waterfront restaurants stay open late, and the holiday-decorated district has a slower, more old-Sacramento feel than the rest of downtown. If you’re planning a December night out, the Sacramento Lighted Boat Parade on the waterfront runs in early December and makes for a strong double-feature — both events are free, both use the water and the historic district as their backdrop.
If you’re building a full holiday season itinerary, the site’s roundup of Sacramento Christmas events for 2026 covers the larger picture, and the Sacramento holiday markets guide can help fill in the shopping side of the season.
Bottom Line
The Theatre of Lights has been running for nearly two decades because it gets the format right. It’s short enough to hold a child’s attention, specific enough to feel like something Sacramento actually owns, and free enough to remove the mental friction of planning around it. The show is best on a cold December Friday, standing in the middle of a closed K Street with the old brick buildings lit up overhead. It’s one of those Sacramento traditions that doesn’t require any convincing once you’ve been.
The 2026 season is confirmed. Check downtownsac.org for the official opening date when it’s posted, and plan on the show starting around Thanksgiving week.
